| QUOTE Former UFC and PRIDE star, Akihiro Gono pulled off a “Submission of the Year” contender at Dynamite!! 2009 today in Japan, locking up a very impressive armbar in the second round to defeat Hayato “Mach” Sakurai.
Sakurai was very much the aggressor in the first round, dominating the stand-up for the most part. Gono did manage to secure a takedown late on in the round but failed to capitalise before the bell brought the round to an end.
Gono came out for the second much more determined to take the fight to the ground and secured an easy takedown early on. Gono neatly moved to the crucifix position before rolling into a beautiful armbar, forcing Sakurai to tap out.
The win mean’s Gono has secured back-to-back wins since his sickening head-kick defeat to Dan Hornbuckle on his Sengoku debut back in February.
