QUOTE

Strikeforce welterweight, Jay Hieron cemented his place as the number one contender in the division with an impressive win tonight in Sunrise, Florida against MMA veteran, Joe Riggs.

Both fighters came out looking to engage on the feet and it was Hieron who got the better of it, landing some nice punches and kicks.Hieron lands a spinning back kick but there is very little in the way of action and the crowd grows restless. Riggs pulls guard in the final minute and doesn’t allow Hieron to posture up.

Hieron starts the second a little more aggressive, landing a nice left hook followed by a leg kick. Riggs jumps guard again and attempts to stay active off his back, going for numerous submissions, as well as striking from there. Hieron starts to take over though from top position and lands some hard shots, so Riggs decides it’s time to get out and returns to his feet.

The third see’s Riggs come out more aggressive, landing a nice left hook which rocks Hieron. Smelling blood he tried for a flying knee but is quickly taken down by Hieron. After a few moments and a number of body shots from Hieron the referee stands them up. Riggs rushes Hieron but leaves himself exposed and is dropped himself this time with a left. Hieron swarms him, looking to finish the fight but Riggs survives and attempts a kimura. Hieron defends well, keeping his hands locked, before both men return to their feet.

All three judges scored the bout 30-27 in favour of Hieron who should now receive the welterweight title shot he so desperately wants.
